Union Rescue Mission mourns death of Merrill Rabus

The Union Rescue Mission issued a statement on the death of Merrill Rabus.

The Union Rescue Mission is saddened to have learned of the passing of Merrill Rabus, former employee and program participant of the Union Rescue Mission.

“His death was tragic, but his life is eternal”, said Doug Nolte, CEO of the Union Rescue Mission. “Our staff is saddened by this loss, but we also realize that Merrill is in heaven. We also reflect on everyone involved in this terrible situation.” Nolte says that while Merrill’s family is grieving, so are others who must deal with the consequences of this tragedy. “Merrill is the type of person who would forgive; he was forgiven and never took that for granted”, said Nolte.

Rabus, who worked in the New Leaf Book Mercantile for the Union Rescue Mission from 2017 to 2020, was also involved in the residential life change program called New Beginnings. This program is an intensive program to help men experiencing homelessness, addiction, poverty, or other life challenges. He graduated in 2019.

Rabus was the man killed Friday, at 13th and Oliver. Police say he was on his bike and was hit by a driver, who then shot him and left the area. The driver was followed and arrested soon after. She has since been booked into jail for murder and traffic charges. An exact motive for the shooting is not clear.

A Gofundme has been set up to help with funeral expenses.
