A fire broke out Thursday evening in a large scrap pile at a salvage yard in northwest Wichita, sending up a thick column of black smoke that could be seen across the Wichita area.
The fire was reported around 7:30 p.m. at an iron and salvage yard near 29th Street North and Hoover Road. Dispatchers reported getting a number of calls about the smoke. Crews blocked Hoover Road between 29th and 37th Streets North while they battled the fire.
No injuries were reported.
