Concerns over the spread of Coronavirus have led to the release of about 200 inmates from the Sedgwick County Jail.

Our news partners at KWCH 12 report that all of the inmates who were released were being held for low level crimes.  Sheriff Jeff Easter says the jail is almost always at capacity and inmates interact with each other, with no way for them to maintain a save distance of 6 feet.

Those that have been released were being held for crimes as simple as traffic cases.  The concern wasn’t just for inmates, but for the spread of the virus to jail staff, who would then transmit the virus to people they would come into contact with outside of the jail.
