The Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center in Wichita has introduced a new feature that is aimed at helping the experience for patrons with sensory sensitivities.
The facility will be providing “sensory packs” that will include a pop-it fidget toy, earplugs, a lollipop, and a sanitizing wipe. The items are intended to help patrons manage sensory sensitivities while enjoying events at Century II. The inclusion of a small treat, like the lollipop, provides a simple and effective way to engage the senses and create a calming effect.
Century II box office manager Andrea Blann discovered the idea at a conference, and there was a panel “where a man discussed the tribulations of attending events with his Autistic son who is prone to sensory overload. While he used to take a backpack full of coping mechanisms, when he created his own comic con, he established sensory packs for anyone who needed them.”
Patrons can inquire where to pick up the sensory packs at the box office during any ticketed event. The packs are available on a first-come, first-served basis free of charge and can be taken home for continued use. The packs will be available for the first time during the 5-day engagement of “Beetlejuice” April 2nd through the 6th, and they will continue to be accessible at all ticketed events moving forward.
