HumanKind Ministries said its emergency winter shelter in Wichita has been at full capacity during the past week’s bitter cold temperatures.

A count has not been finalized, but the agency reported that 220 individuals were served dinner. The men’s sleeping area, which has a capacity of 128 beds, was at full capacity. The men’s overflow area, with a capacity of 66 beds, had a limited number of bunks available, indicating a high demand for shelter services. The women’s sleeping area, which can accommodate 72 individuals, also had a few remaining bunks.

HumanKind’s community room provided shelter for approximately 48 people who were unable or not wanting to secure a bed in one of the designated sleeping areas. The agency said its primary focus remains on creating a welcoming and secure environment where people can get essential services, including a warm meal, a place to sleep, and safety from the elements.

The emergency shelter opened in November at the former Park Elementary School at 1025 North Main.
