Evergy has filed an application with the state of Kansas to recover the costs of three new electric power facilities in Reno, Sumner and Douglas counties.

The Kansas Corporation Commission has scheduled a virtual public hearing for 6 p.m. on March 5th to allow Evergy customers to get information on the proposal.

The utility recently announced plans to build two combined cycle gas-fired generating turbine plants.  One would be located near Evergy’s Viola Substation in Sumner County and the other would be near Hutchinson in Reno County, and they would go into service in 2029 and 203o.   There are also plans for a solar facility in Douglas County that would be ready at the end of 2026.

Evergy is asking the KCC for a predetermination on the prudency of the investments and whether the company would be entitled to recover the costs of the facilities, likely through rate increases.

To participate in the virtual hearing via Zoom and make a public comment, advance registration is required by noon on March 4.   That can be done through the KCC’s web site at www.kcc.ks.gov.  For persons wishing to watch, but not comment during the public hearing, a live video stream will be available on the KCC YouTube channel. The hearing will also be recorded for later viewing.

In addition to the hearing, the Commission will accept written comments through 5 p.m. on April 7. Comments may be submitted online, by mail or by calling the KCC at 785-271-3140 or 800-662-0027.
