UPDATE: The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has identified the man killed Thursday night in a confrontation with police in Wichita as 28-year-old Devario Edwards. The KBI also released a brief dash cam video showing Edwards stepping out of a car and firing shots at officers in a parking lot at Spirit Aerosystems.
Police said the man kicked in the door of a home in the 5800 block of East Mainsgate and pointed a rifle at a person inside. The rifle wouldn’t fire and the man left, then he made statements on social media about suicide. His car was picked up by a license plate reading system and officers tracked him to a parking lot at Spirit Aerosystems in the 3900 block of South Oliver.
Police said the man got out of his car shortly after 11 p.m. and fired about 20 shots at law enforcement officers. Five Wichita officers and three Sedgwick County deputies returned fire and Edwards was hit. The officers fired over 100 rounds during the exchange of gunfire. Edwards was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in to look into the shooting, and agents were on the scene during the night.
