Newton police and school officials are looking into an incident that forced a school bus to stop and evacuate students.

Police said a USD 373 bus was taking students home Friday when a can of body spray was punctured.  The bus pulled over on South Kansas Avenue near SE 14th Street and the driver asked the students to step off the bus.   There were 64 students on the bus at the time.

Police said the students were told to stay with the bus while it aired out, but most of them scattered. Eight students stayed with the bus, and they were taken home on the bus.  The other students walked home, were picked up by police, or got other rides.  It’s believed that all students are safe.

Newton school district officials said they are cooperating with police on the investigation.
