Wichita officials said the emergency winter homeless shelter will be opening a few days ahead of schedule.
The shelter was scheduled to open Monday, December 2nd, but because of cold overnight temperatures expected through the weekend, it was decided to open the shelter on Friday, November 29th. The shelter will be operated by HumanKind Ministries.
The 230-bed shelter has been set up at the former Park Elementary School building at 1025 North Main. The city is in the process of remodeling the building for use as a Multi-Agency Center (MAC) to provide shelter and services for the homeless and help them transition into permanent housing.
