Wichita police have arrested a man who kidnapped and sexually assaulted a woman earlier this month, and they have identified another victim from a separate attack.
Police said a woman was walking home around 9:30 p.m. on November 19th in the 500 block of West Skinner when a man drove up in a car and offered her money for sexual acts. The woman did not respond and kept walking, and the man threatened to harm her, then he struck her with the car and dragged her inside and drove her to an alley in the 1600 block of South Waco. He assaulted the woman and drove her home, and police said he photographed her ID and made death threats if she reported the incident.
The woman noted the man’s license plate and gave officers detailed information after calling 911, and Patrol South officers used Flock camera technology to identify the vehicle, which connected to a relative of the suspect in Haysville, and the suspect was later arrested.
The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against 23-year-old Christopher Calisay, including aggravated kidnapping, two counts of rape, two counts of aggravated battery and criminal threat.
On November 26th, investigators met with officials from Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center, crime analysts and officers from all Patrol Bureaus to talk about this case, and officers from the Broadway Corridor recalled a similar case. Officers found the woman in that case and talked with her and also looked at surveillance footage, and they found that the exact same vehicle was involved. More investigative work is being done and information will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for charges in this case.
Police Chief Joe Sullivan issued a statement about the case, saying “This was a heinous and disgusting act of violence that has no place in our community. I am proud of the
exceptional work of our patrol officers, detectives, and all personnel involved in this case. Their commitment to justice and the use of innovative technology led to the resolution of this crime and sent a strong message that such acts are unacceptable and will not go unpunished. The survivor demonstrated remarkable courage and strength in the face of this despicable act, and it was her bravery that helped us apprehend this individual and remove him from the streets.”
