The FBI is investigating racist text messages that have been sent to Black men, women and students across the country, including students at Derby High School in Kansas.
The messages were sent anonymously and they have been reported in Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama, Pennsylvania and New York. Derby school officials said the message was circulated in schools, and it responded with a statement: “Targeted hateful and racist messages have no place in our community and especially not in our schools. Derby Public Schools does not tolerate harassment, discrimination or racism.”
The messages are reported to have variations in wording but they carry a similar message and they have made a reference to slavery. The messages directed recipients to show up at a particular location, including a “plantation” in North Carolina. Some of the messages have also referenced the incoming Presidential administration.
The FBI said it’s working with the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission as they look into the texts.
