A Red Flag Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for central and south central Kansas for Monday afternoon and evening.

Dry and windy conditions will create an extreme grassland fire danger for the region.  The warning will be in effect from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and it includes the Wichita area.

South winds are expected to be 25 to 35 miles an hour with gusts up to 50 miles an hour at time.  Humidity will be as low as 20 percent.   Any fires that develop will spread rapidly and become very difficult to control.   People are urged to be careful with smoking materials and any sources of fire, and outdoor burning is not recommended.

A large fire burned about 350 acres last week near 29th Street North and Greenwich Road, and crews from several departments were involved in bringing it under control.  One abandoned building was destroyed but there were no injuries.
