A former Kansas lawmaker from south central Kansas has been given six months probation in connection with a DUI arrest in Topeka earlier this year.

Former Kansas House member Carl Maughan of Colwich had pleaded no contest in Shawnee County to a charge of driving under the influence.  A charge of possession of a firearm while under the influence and two traffic charges were dismissed.   The charges were filed in connection with a March 4th arrest.    Maughan will have to comply with a drug/alcohol evaluation.   He would face three months in jail for violating the terms of the probation.

Maughan, 52, is facing DUI charges in another case in Sedgwick County, after being involved in a May 25th crash at 29th Street North and 151st Street West.

Maughan served in House District 90, which covers northwest and north central Sedgwick County and extends into a portion of north Wichita.  He suspended his re-election campaign after the March arrest.   The Kansas Supreme Court made a decision in June to bar him from practicing law for a year because of mishandling conflicts of interest in a case.
