Workers at ports from Maine to Texas are hitting the picket lines in what could be the most disruptive walk-out to the U.S. economy in decades. It could stop the flow of household goods, clothing, toys, cars and many other products right before the holidays kick-off.

The International Longshoremen’s Association says they’ll walk out unless there’s a new contract.

JPMorgan says the cost to the country if a strike happens will be roughly five-billion-dollars a day. The White House says it will not invoke its legal powers to intervene.

Officials with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey say they’ve prepared for the strike, and they said they’re prepared to use state stockpiles to deploy resources including generators if they’re needed.  New York Governor Kathy Hochul says they expect disruptions with supplies, but feels consumers won’t really notice a shortage in most essential goods like food and medical supplies for now. The strike halts all activity involving loading and unloading cargo containers and vehicles, while cruise ships are not affected.
