Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab said he got a “generic response” from the U.S. Postal Service when he sent a letter to the Postmaster General raising concerns about the handling of mail ballots.

Schwab sent the letter on September 9th to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, saying that nearly 1,000 Kansas voters were disenfranchised because of operational failures in the handling of mail ballots.   He said the ballots were either properly postmarked but received by county election offices after the three-day grace period, or they lacked a required postmark.

“Some ballots were not counted because they lacked the required postmark by the U.S. Postal Service, a simple and easy step. This is unacceptable,” Schwab said.

Schwab said instead of receiving a direct response from DeJoy, he received a generic reply from the Postal Service that failed to address the concerns.  Schwab said he is deeply troubled by the dismissal of the concerns, especially with the November general election just a few weeks away.   He said “Rather than work with us to find solutions, they chose to overlook the problem.”

DeJoy has served as Postmaster General since the Trump Administration.
