The Wichita City Council has approved a contract with an engineering consultant to look at the future of the city’s current water treatment facility.

The Main Water Treatment Plant at 1800 West Museum Boulevard was constructed in 1939 and was expanded in 1954.   It will be replaced by the new Wichita Water Works plant that has been under construction near 21st and Zoo Boulevard, and the new facility should be completed in early 2025.  The new plant will have a capacity of 120 million gallons of water per day.

The city will hire the Burns & McDonnell at a cost not to exceed $85,000.   The firm will help city staff in defining options for the current plant and developing estimated costs.  The options may include demolition of the plant, preserving it for future or emergency use, or continuing to operate the plant at a reduced capacity.

Staff will work with the firm and present a preferred option to the City Council at a later date, along with a contract for the second phase of the study.
