The National Weather Service has rated the tornado that hit a northeastern Kansas community as an EF-3, with peak winds estimated at 140 miles an hour.
The storm on Monday killed one person and injured three others in the town of Westmoreland, and 22 houses were destroyed. Pottawatomie County officials identified the victim as Ann Miller.
Weather Service officials said the tornado was on the ground for eight minutes and it traveled over two and a half miles.
