hurkle-durkle

Quite simply, Hurkle-Durkle means to lounge in bed waaaay past the point when it is time to to get up. It is being lazy when you should be doing something productive, like being at work!

It is an old Scottish phrase dating back to the 1800’s. Hurkle means “to draw the body together,” like curl up. Where exactly ‘Durkle’ came from isn’t so clear. Maybe it just came about because it is fun to say. Kinda rhymes. Like herky-jerky. But that is just a guess.

Anyway, Hurkle-Durkling has been making the rounds again thanks to a TikTok clip posted by actor Kira Kosarin that’s been viewed 4 million times. Even with the new found fame – it is NOT in common use. But, have at it. If “Fetch” didn’t make it, I’m not sure Hurkle-Durkle has a chance.
