Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left two teenagers dead in a northeast Wichita neighborhood.

The shooting was reported shortly before midnight Friday night in the 5200 block of East Kensington, in a neighborhood east of the intersection of 17th and Oliver.  At about the same time, officers were sent to a hospital on a report of two walk-in shooting victims.

The victims, 19-year-old Jhiquez Roberts and 14-year-old Emoni Shears, were later pronounced dead.

A 14-year-old from Wichita has been arrested on two counts of felony murder and one count of juvenile in possession of a firearm.   Detectives are continuing their investigation to look for additional suspects who may be involved.   It’s believed that everyone involved in the incident knew each other and they were meeting at the location on Kensington.

Police are still investigating and anyone with information is urged to contact investigators at 268-4407, Crime Stoppers at 267-2111 or the See Something Say Something hotline at 519-2282.

The deaths are the second and third homicides in Wichita this year.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan issued a statement on the shooting:

“Receiving notifications about shootings is always disheartening, and it becomes even more saddening when it involves the loss of a child’s life.  This has to stop.  As a community, we must demonstrate to our young people that there are alternatives to violence.”
