Lawmakers talking about later start for Kansas school year

State lawmakers are considering legislation that, if enacted, would require Kansas public schools to start the academic year after Labor Day.

Supporters of the measure say the move would save money by reducing the cost of air-conditioning classrooms during the hottest part of the summer. Critics said the change would shake up long-established schedules for prep sports.

If the bill gets widespread support, it could be debated when state legislators convene in January.
