Police have arrested a Wichita teenager for a fatal crash that happened Wednesday in a north side neighborhood.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested for one count of reckless second degree murder and one count of reckless aggravated battery. The charges are connected with a fatal two-vehicle crash near 23rd Street North and Jackson.
Police said 23-year-old Nancy Lopez of Wichita was killed in the crash, and another 23-year-old woman was taken to a hospital where she remains in critical condition. The two women were in a car that collided with an SUV. Officers said the SUV was traveling north on Jackson and the car was going east on 23rd when they collided in the intersection.
The two people in the SUV had minor injuries, and the teen who was arrested was the driver. Police said excessive speed was a factor in the crash. Information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for the filing of charges.
This was the city’s 31st traffic death of the year.
