Police were on the scene of a standoff Wednesday afternoon at a west Wichita home, and students at a nearby elementary school had to be bused to a location where parents could pick them up.

A man with a gun locked himself in a home near 9th and Zoo Boulevard after a mental health response team was sent to check on him around noon.   The team backed away from the home and called for police units, and a SWAT team was sent to the home.

Neighbors were asked to voluntarily leave their homes, and a lockout was imposed at Black Traditional Magnet Elementary School across the street.  Students at the school were taken by bus to Hadley Middle School and parents were notified.

Police negotiators and the SWAT team were on the scene, and a 39-year-old man was taken into custody early in the evening after a standoff that lasted about seven hours.
