A staff member was injured trying to break up a fight at Wichita West High School Thursday afternoon.

The fight between two students broke out around 1 p.m. during the school’s passing period. A staff member was injured while trying to intervene.

Officials told our partners at KWCH 12 News that a school resource officer also responded with school security. Because of the amount of students in the hallway, he then asked for additional officers, leading to an “officer in trouble” call.

As additional staff and officers arrived, the crowd dispersed and students returned to their classroom. The school was then placed on lockdown. More officers were called to the school around 2:30 to keep an eye on the campus as students were being dismissed for the day.

There has been no updates yet on the staff member’s condition. The individual was said to have suffered serious injuries.
