Wichita Man Accused of Shooting Outside a Church Appears in Court

A man charged in connection with a shooting outside of a Wichita church during a funeral made is first appearance in court Wednesday.

18-year-old Demetrius Carter appeared in Sedgwick County District Court, where he faces 5 on charges that include aggravated assault, aggravated child endangerment, and criminal damage to property.

On Friday, June 16th, Carter allegedly began shooting at a crowd of people outside of the New Life Church near 11th and Oliver. Witnesses said the family of the deceased turned him away from the funeral, and he began shooting. Wichita Police said other people in the crows returned fire and wounded carter in his arm. No one else was hurt.

Carter is currently booked in the Sedgwick County Jail on a $5 million bond.
