Memorial Day is a day we remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. And, there are a special set of rules for how to properly display the American flag.
Did you know:
- According to the United States Code, on Memorial Day the flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then “raised briskly” to full-staff until sunset.
- It’s one of six days on the calendar when the flag is to be flown at half-staff – along with Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15), Korean War Veterans Armistice Day (July 27), Patriot Day (Sept. 11), and Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7).
Because I was Boy Scout, (and my dad and grandpa are members of the American Legion), I did get some flag etiquette instruction. If you didn’t know, now you can share. It’s up to us to “pass it on down.”
