UPDATE: Man killed after police standoff at Seneca & MacArthur apartments

UPDATE 8 A.M. THURSDAY

A man who was firing gunshots all morning at a south Wichita apartment has been shot and killed by police.

Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said officers responded to a report of an “explosion” at around 1:55 a.m. Thursday at an apartment complex near MacArthur and Seneca. When officers arrived, they heard gunshots.

Responding officers determined someone was firing gunshots from inside an apartment building, and nearby apartments were evacuated because of the continuing shooting. No injuries were reported.

Chief Ramsay said investigators found out who the suspect was, and SWAT tried calling and texting the man without success. Chief Ramsay said that man was in a “mental health crisis,” and that he was alone in the apartment.

Officers kept trying to make contact with the shooter until just before 6 a.m., when there was more shooting. Two officers fired multiple shots and killed the suspect.

Police said the suspect had multiple guns, at least a rifle and a handgun. Around 30 gunshots were reported altogether, and an armored police vehicle was struck four times. Police will be out investigating the scene throughout the day. Typically the Wichita Police Department will put officers on leave if they’re involved in a shooting like this.
