A coalition of local and national organizations is calling for the federal government to take over the investigation into the death of a Wichita teenager last fall at the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center.
17-year-old Cedric Lofton died in September after being restrained during a struggle at the center. A community task force recently delivered a number of recommendations for changes in the juvenile justice system.
A coalition that includes the national Rainbow Push Coalition, the Journey For Justice Alliance and the Kansas Justice Advocates is calling on U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint an independent investigator. Members of the coalition spoke at a news conference Tuesday outside the Sedgwick County Courthouse in Wichita.
Jitu Brown with the Journey for Justice Alliance said the coalition will continue to fight to see the life and legacy of Cedric Lofton will not go away.
