Today, I salute Marine Veteran Retired Major James Capers Jr. Recently, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, James was featured, recognized as the first Black man to lead a U.S. Marine Reconnaissance company and receive a battlefield commission. During the ceremony, many Veterans were honored for their service and sacrifice, but there was extra focus on James. In 1967, while serving in Vietnam, despite being badly wounded, Maj. Capers fought off a larger enemy force and ensured his team’s safety before his own. It’s those actions that inspired the presentation of a resolution and proclamation supporting the effort to have the Medal of Honor awarded to him. Good luck James and THANK YOU for your service.
