A jury in Saline County has returned a guilty verdict for a Salina man in the shooting death of his girlfriend 14 years ago.
A verdict was returned this week for 52-year-old Steven Couch, Jr in the shooting death of 39-year-old Carol Williams. Prosecutors said Williams was shot at her home in New Cambria on February 17th, 2011. Couch was arrested and charged with first degree murder, but charges were later dropped.
The Kansas Attorney General’s Office said in 2016, while serving a federal prison sentence, Couch confessed to a cellmate who later contacted law enforcement. With the new information, the Kansas Bureau Investigation reopened the case and Couch was arrested in Salina in 2022.
Sentencing is set for July 10th in Saline County District Court and Couch faces a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
