Wichita City Council members have approved a contract for design work on a new fire station and replacements for two other stations.

The city’s Capital Improvement Program includes $59 million in funding for new and replacement fire stations over the next ten years.  The Council approved a contract for almost $1.6 million for three stations.   The city has purchased property at Pawnee and Maize Road for a new fire station, and there are plans to replace Fire Station 8 at Central and Elder and Fire Station 15 at Lincoln and Rock Road.

The contract is for full design work and construction administration, including $200,000 for the management of public art for the stations.  The public art concept will be presented to the City Council at a later time.

The design firm Tessere in Wichita will begin work on the stations.  Construction of the new station at Pawnee and Maize Road is expected to go out for bids later this year.  Construction funding for the other stations will be presented to the City Council later.
