An autopsy report has identified the cause of death for a Wichita firefighter who collapsed at the scene of a house fire last summer.

The report said 27-year-old Ty Voth died of cardiac arrest.  He was taken from the scene of a fire in Haysville on August 1st, 2024 and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.  Voth had been with the Wichita Fire Department for five years, and he was based at Station 5.

The International Association of Firefighters, Local 135, issued a statement on the autopsy report, saying “Although Ty’s death was ruled accidental, it doesn’t take away the pain this tragedy brought to his family, friends and crew members.  The report had several recommendations that need to be addressed by the Wichita Fire Department and in Ty’s honor these recommendations should be adhered to and assure that the chances of this ever happening again to another firefighter can be made as minimal as possible.”

During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Fire Captain Lance Diffenbaugh said a scholarship is being established in Voth’s name to help students learn to become firefighters.  He said Voth’s name will be placed on the national Fallen Firefighters Memorial in May.    A proclamation was read to name May 2nd through the 4th as Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.
