After recent incidents where children were killed by guns, the Wichita Police Department is offering free gun locks to city residents.
A toddler was shot and killed in the 2200 block of South Santa Fe on February 28th, and a 7-year-old boy was killed in a shooting on March 16th in the 3700 block of East Ross Parkway. Adults have been arrested and charged with murder in the two incidents, but there has been no word on how the shootings took place. More information was expected to be released at a news conference Monday.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said in a post on social media, “We experienced two tragedies recently when two children under the age of 10 accessed unsecured firearms. That is why we are giving away free gun locks to anyone in our community who wants one. We want to prevent these accidents. Pick up a FREE gun lock at any Wichita Police Station—no questions asked. Let’s keep our kids safe!”
