A storm system brought snow and blizzard conditions to western Kansas for much of the day Wednesday.

Interstate 70 was closed from the Kansas-Colorado border to Salina because of strong winds and snow.   Westbound traffic was reopened from Oakley to the Colorado line, but the interstate remained closed between Oakley and Salina because of winter conditions.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reported other roads that have reopened in the state:

  • U.S. 36 between Norton and the Colorado border
  • U.S. 40 between Oakley and the Colorado border
  • U.S. 24 between Colby and Levant
  • K-25 between U.S. 40 and the Nebraska border
  • K-27 between Sharon Springs and the Nebraska border

Several highways east of U.S. 83 also remain closed because of winter weather conditions and roadway blockages. Any non-essential travel should continue to be delayed until conditions improve.

High wind warnings were in effect for central and south central Kansas for northwest winds that will be 35 to 45 miles an hour with gusts up to 70.

Wind damage caused power outages in Russell and other communities.
