Police said they have arrested a woman in connection with the shooting death of a seven-year-old boy in an east Wichita neighborhood.
Officers were called to a report of a shooting around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3700 block of East Ross Parkway. At an apartment, they found seven-year-old Davion Gunter with a gunshot wound to his torso. The boy was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police found seven other children and several adults at the scene. Detectives from the Exploited and Missing Child Unit were called in to talk to witnesses, and a 25-year-old woman was arrested. She was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on felony murder and child endangerment. The children at the scene were placed into protective custody.
Police Chief Joe Sullivan called the incident “a heartbreaking loss for our community,” affecting not only the families involved but also for first responders, emergency dispatchers, crime scene investigators, and medical professionals working on the case.
