The Kansas Highway Patrol has confirmed at least eight deaths after a pileup that involved more than 70 vehicles on Interstate 70.  The crashes happened Friday as severe winds created blowing dust and low visibility on the interstate, forcing officials to shut the highway down between Goodland and Wakeeney for several hours.

Goodland Fire Chief Brian James posted photos of the scene on social media.  He said more than 30 people were taken to area hospitals after the crashed between mile markers 28 and 29.  The Kansas Highway Patrol and around two dozen other agencies were still working at the scene on Saturday, and the number of deaths is unknown.  I-70 will be closed between Goodland and Colby for an extended period of time.

Sherman County officials declared a state of local emergency, and shelters were established in Goodland and Colby.   Anyone who is trying to reach a family member or loved one who had travel plans in this area, please call the Kansas Highway Patrol at (785) 827-4437. This number has been established for those still trying to reach a traveler who may have been involved in this incident. Family members wanting to check if their loved one is at the shelter should call 800-Red-Cross (800-733-2767). They will not be able to release the names of the individuals but will be able to pass the message along.
