UPDATE:  The statewide tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday is still on for most of the state, but it has been canceled for the Topeka area because of high winds and expected weather conditions and damage.   For the rest of the state, the drill is still scheduled for 10 a.m.   There won’t be an alert on NOAA weather radio but some communities may be testing sirens as part of the drill.

The National Weather Service is calling on Kansas residents to have their severe weather safety plans ready for the upcoming storm season.   March 3rd through the 7th is Severe Weather/Flood Preparedness Week.

Governor Kelly has signed a proclamation calling on Kansans to be prepared and vigilant during the coming months.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management says being prepared includes being aware of weather conditions and having a family emergency kit and an emergency plan. Kansans are encouraged to prepare a home emergency kit with supplies to sustain every family member for a minimum of seven days. Kits should include nonperishable foods, a gallon of water per person per day, blankets, flashlights and batteries, a weather radio, extra clothing, necessary medications, and other survival items. Kits should also be prepared for household pets.

The National Weather Service is continuing its storm spotter preparedness classes throughout the month.  The classes will be presented Monday in Eureka, Tuesday in Russell, Wednesday in Howard and Thursday in Great Bend.  The Wichita class is scheduled for March 24th at 6:30 p.m. at the Northwest High School auditorium.

Sedgwick County Emergency Management is presenting the National Weather Service safety program throughout March.  Monday will be in the Derby Public Library, Tuesday will be at the Viola City Building, and Wednesday’s program will take place at the Colwich City Building, with all times at 6:30 p.m.  There will be a presentation Saturday, March 8th and 10 a.m. at the Mulvane Fire station.
