Today, the AWESOME is in Woodhaven, Michigan. A simple act of kindness by a Michigan café owner has transformed the life of a homeless Veteran—and inspired an entire community to step in and help. Bridget Watson, the owner of Cafe Sweets, first met Don, a homeless Army veteran, when he stopped by her café looking for cans and bottles to return for money. She quickly learned more about him—his past work as a trucker and his love for dogs and plants. She also learned he was struggling with ongoing health issues and homelessness, which made it impossible for him to work. Bridget paid for a motel and turned to social media for help, and that’s when her community stepped up. Some donated winter clothing; another person offered an apartment at just $50 a month, at which point someone else paid the rent for a year.
