The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate has died after an apparent suicide attempt.
The Sheriff’s Office said a 43-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell shortly before 7 Tuesday evening. Deputies and medical staff began treatment until EMS crews arrived. The inmate was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 7:30 p.m.
The inmate was taken into custody earlier in the day on charges of aggravated assault and interference with law enforcement.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will look into the death with assistance from the Sheriff’s Office investigations division. This is the second in-custody death at the jail this year.
