Wichita City Council members voted unanimously to approve a lease for the use of the clubhouse at Clapp Park, at Harry and Oliver.
The Council approved the continued use of the clubhouse by Duck’s Flying Discs, which has leased the facility since 2021. Interim park and recreation director Reggie Davidson said Duck’s was one of only two proposals received for the lease, but one vendor did not show for the interview with city staff. Davidson said Duck’s met all the criteria to be chosen as the vendor for the site.
Davidson said Duck’s has provided over two thousand volunteer hours to maintain two disc golf courses, pickup trash, trim tree limbs and maintain the creek area. That saves staff time for the city park staff. He said there is also an economic impact of $300,000 to the city from one national disc golf tournament, known as The Keeper of the Chains or the Wichita Open.
The lease is for $700 per month the first year, with $200 for utilities. The second year will be $800 for rent and $200 for utilities, and the third year will increase to $900 per month.
City Council members raised concerns last year that the city had not been enforcing a previous lease agreement that called for increases in rent, and they also said the clubhouse should have been put out for bids to other possible renters. Duck’s at the time was paying $300 per month in rent when the agreement had called for yearly increases.
