Winter storm brings heavy snow to Kansas

A winter storm brought moderate to heavy snow across northern and eastern areas of Kansas on Tuesday, with the heaviest amounts in the southeast.

Light to moderate snow fell early in the day and heavy snow began during the late morning hours, continuing into the afternoon.   Wichita had 5.3 inches of snow, with 5.7 inches in Newton, 6 inches in El Dorado, 7 inches in Bel Aire, 7.5 inches in Haven, 9 inches in Hutchinson and in Turon.   McPherson had 3.7 inches and Salina reported 4 inches.

A winter storm warning is in effect for south central and eastern Kansas through 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Temperatures will fall into single digits for Tuesday through Thursday and the winds will range from 10 to 30 degrees below zero.  An extreme cold warning will be in effect for much of Kansas from Tuesday night through Thursday.
