Wichita city leaders, Ascension Via Christi officials and the Kansas Health Foundation have announced a health and wellness program for Wichita firefighters.

Project Wichita Firefighters is a cancer screening and wellness initiative that encourages early intervention and screening for cancer and other health issues that affect firefighters more than the general population.    Wichita Fire Chief Tammy Snow said firefighters face unpredictable risks but they answer the call because they believe in the safety and well being of the city.  She said the dangers don’t stop when the flames are extinguished, and firefighters face the challenges of cancer, heart disease, sleep disorders and the mental strain of the job.  She said the new initiative is a commitment and a promise to stand alongside firefighters and provide them with the tools, resources and support they need to live long and healthy lives after their service.

Firefighters union Local 135 president Ted Bush said recent research has made it clear that firefighters are at a significantly higher risk of developing cancer and other health difficulties.  He said the initiative is a promise to do everything possible to combat a growing threat to firefighters.

The Kansas Health Foundation has allocated $150,000 to support this program. It will enhance cancer, cardiovascular and pulmonary screenings and long-term wellness for active and retired Wichita firefighters. A dedicated nurse navigator will be there to guide them through their care. The plan is to give firefighters the support and resources needed to catch potential health concerns before they become serious.

Via Christi nurse navigator Keisha Humphries said the program has been in development for the past year.   She said there will be a phone number dedicated for the use of firefighters, and there will be yearly screenings to find cancers early.
