The Wichita City Council has delayed final approval of an ordinance that will allow golf carts on some city streets.

The Council approved the ordinance on first reading at their January 14th meeting, but at their next regular meeting on Tuesday they heard from citizens who raised concerns about the ordinance and said the public was given little chance to comment.

Vice-Mayor J.V. Johnston moved to delay the final vote by a couple of months to allow time for the city’s six District Advisory Boards to hear from the public and provide input.  The ordinance is expected to go to five of the six DABs in early February and the District 1 DAB is expected to consider it in March.   Johnston is hoping that final action can be taken at the Council’s meeting on March 18th.

The Council voted 6-1 to defer action on the ordinance.  Council member Dalton Glasscock voted no, wanting to go ahead with the new regulations and make amendment later.  The ordinance would allow golf carts on streets with a speed limit of 30 miles an hour or less, but they would still be banned on arterial streets and public highways, and they would be banned on sidewalks, public trails and bike paths.  Drivers would have to be 18 years of age, but the citizens who spoke to the Council on Tuesday wanted to allow younger drivers if they have a valid license.
