The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said a 79-year-old man was found dead early Friday inside a home near Haysville after a standoff that lasted over seven hours.
Deputies were called to a home in the 8400 block of South Minnesota Circle around 4;20 p.m. Thursday on a report of a domestic violence incident involving a firearm. Reports said a man was threatening his 47-year-old son with a handgun during an argument over money. The man threatened to kill his son, and after he was locked out of the home, he was reported to have made threats about shooting through the door to get back inside.
Deputies got to the home and safely evacuated all other people who were inside. The Wichita/Sedgwick County SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene and talks began around 10:30 p.m. with efforts to contact the man by phone. He refused to surrender, and chemical munitions were fired into the home, but the man still refused to step outside.
Shortly after 6 a.m. Friday, a SWAT team entered the home and found the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate.
