Crews were on the scene of a three-alarm fire at a manufacturing plant in Andover early Friday.

The fire broke out around 1:15 a.m. at the Sherwin-Williams plant at 13th and Andover Road.   Crews found it in one of the facility’s outbuildings and not the main plant.   Crews from Sedgwick County were called to help at the scene.

Andover Fire-Rescue worked with a chemist from Sherwin-Williams and a plan was developed to extinguish the fire, which was contained within a steel tank.  The fire involved hazardous materials and smoke from the fire raised concerns about travel on the Kansas Turnpike, so it was closed down for about two hours as a precaution.  The Turnpike was reopened around 4 a.m.  The smoke was carried away and dissipated by south winds, and officials said there was no material runoff from the site.

The fire was brought under control around 5:30 a.m.   One Sherwin-Williams employee had minor burns and was treated at the scene.   The cause is under investigation.
