Today, the AWESOME is in Portland, Oregon. It’s another reminder that not all heroes wear capes. A woman’s fiery death was avoided thanks to the speed of police, fire, and medical first responders who conducted a harrowing rescue two weeks ago. Portland Police Bureau Sgt. Sarah Kerwin said this was the first time she had ever received a call from a person trapped inside a burning car, saying they were on fire and couldn’t get out. By the time Sarah had reached the car, it was fully engulfed in flames, and she could see the seatbelt had burned through, and the driver was slumped over, unconscious. With the help of the fire department, they were able to get the driver out, and Sarah immediately started CPR. Sarah credited her training for knowing what to do and saving the woman’s life…AND THAT’S AWESOME.
