A new winter storm brought moderate to heavy snow to the Wichita area Thursday afternoon.
The snow began to accumulate on areas still covered by ice and snow from last weekend’s winter storm, and driving conditions have become slick and hazardous again on the major roadways. The Emergency Accident Reporting Plan is in effect for Wichita, Goddard, Haysville and Derby. That applies to accidents with no injuries, no alcohol involved and the vehicles can still be driven. Drivers should exchange information and submit an accident report within 24 hours.
Early reports had three inches of snow in Wichita as of 6 p.m.
A Winter Storm Warning was issued by the National Weather Service until 6 a.m. Friday for Sedgwick, Kingman, Harper, Sumner, Harvey, Marion, Chase, Butler, Pratt and Barber counties. Some areas of south central Kansas could get up to five inches of snow.
KFDI’s weather partners at KWCH Storm Team 12 say south central Kansas could see two to four inches of snow, while southwestern and southeastern areas of the state will see one to two inches. Western and northern areas of Kansas will see a trace to an inch. The storm is expected to have only snow, with no mixed precipitation.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said the city’s Public Works crews have been preparing to work on the major routes again with this latest storm. She said crews have been working non-stop to make the streets as safe as possible since the storm last weekend. She is calling on drivers to use care when they get out on the streets during this latest storm.
