The winter storm that has moved into Kansas has made travel difficult across the area, leading to closings and cancellations for Sunday into the early part of the week.
McConnell Air Force Base went to Mission-Essential status through 10 a.m. Monday, and the base will technically remain open but there will be minimized operations and limited base services. The base’s snow removal team continues to work to clear roads, the airfield, and parking lots, but the conditions on and off base require limited and cautious travel.
The Wichita school district, USD 259, will not have classes Monday and the non-attendance centers will be closed. Employees assigned to snow removal crews and SSC-based security officers will receive specific instructions from their supervisors.

- The Independent School in Wichita will be closed Monday, the early learning center will be closed and faculty in-service will be canceled.
- Sunrise Christian Academy is closed Monday.
- Central Christian Preschool in Hutchinson.
- Sonshine Preschool in McPherson
- All Butler Community College campuses will be closed Monday.
- Newman University will be closed Monday.
- Friends University campuses in Wichita and Kansas City will be closed Monday
- The KU School of Medicine in Wichita and its clinics will be closed Monday.
- In USD 465, Winfield, teachers will be working remotely for Collaboration Day.
Wichita State University will move to remote operations on Monday. Critical campus operations will remain open, and employees who support these operations will be expected to report to campus. All other employees should work remotely when possible. Pre-session classes will be moved to remote delivery.
All WSU Tech campuses will be closed Monday. Admissions and administrative support will be available virtually. Staff will work virtually or coordinate with supervisors.
Other closings:
- Rainbows United in Wichita and El Dorado will be closed.
- Starkey, Inc. main offices and day programs will be closed Monday.
- Catholic Charities offices in Wichita and Pittsburg will be closed Monday, along with Adult Day Services. Shelters will remain open.
- Harvey County government facilities will be closed Monday. Harvey County Interurban Transportation services will be closed.
- All clinics at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center’s main campus in Wichita will be open at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025. While delays are not currently anticipated, some could occur if weather and road conditions deteriorate. Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Dodge City, Hays, Hutchinson, and Parsons will open one hour late at 9:00 a.m. for the safety of both patients and staff. The CBOC in Salina will open three hours late at noon for the safety of both patients and staff.
- The Sedgwick County Zoo will be closed Monday.
All Ascension Medical Group Via Christi clinics, Via Christi Physical Therapy Centers and Via Christi Occupational Health locations in the Wichita and surrounding areas (Andover, Mulvane, Wellington, Derby) will be closed on Monday, Jan. 6. Surgeries at Founders’ Surgery Center (1961 N Founders Cir, Wichita, KS 67206) and in Via Christi hospitals will continue unless otherwise the patient is otherwise contacted.
