A winter storm brought freezing drizzle and then snow to Kansas over the weekend, causing slick driving conditions and a number of accidents.
The National Weather Service and law enforcement agencies were discouraging travel at mid-morning Saturday with accidents reported on Kellogg and the interstate highways. The elevated highways, bridges and overpasses had icy conditions that led to the crashes. Wichita police have activated the Emergency Accident Reporting Plan, and drivers who are in non-injury collisions with the vehicles still drivable should exchange information and report the crash later at a police substation.
Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner said there was a significant number of crashes on Interstate 70 across Dickinson, Saline, Ellsworth, Lincoln, and Russell counties, with road blockages, jackknifed semis and pile-ups across the area. Portions of Interstate 70 were closed Saturday because of the number of crashes that were reported.
On Sunday, Interstate 70 was closed in both directions from Ellsworth County east to the Missouri state line. Eastbound I-70 was closed from Hays to the Missouri state line. State highways were closed in a number of counties in northeast Kansas because of winter conditions
