Two people were killed and a dozen others were injured in an overnight crash on the Kansas Turnpike in Sumner County.
The crash was reported shortly after midnight Wednesday night in the southbound lanes of the turnpike, just south of the Kansas Star Casino. The Kansas Highway Patrol said a van hauling a trailer had overturned in the southbound lanes, and they were hit by an SUV.
A passenger in the van, 58-year-old Ernestina Eumana-Alvarez of Minneapolis, Minnesota, was killed. An infant boy also died in the crash. The van’s driver, a 55-year-old Minnesota man, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Three women, ages 27, 58 and 67, and two men ages 47 and 63, were taken to hospitals with serious injuries. A 64-year-old woman and a one-year-old boy had minor injuries.
Three men in the SUV had minor injuries.
The southbound lanes of the turnpike were closed south of Exit 33, and traffic was reopened around 7:30 a.m. with the left lane still closed.
