The White House is blaming President-elect Trump for sinking a bipartisan funding bill that would’ve prevented a government shutdown.
Earlier this week Congress announced they’d reached a deal to keep the government open through March. Then Trump released a statement against the bill and House Republicans rejected the deal.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called on Republicans to “stop playing politics with this bipartisan agreement,” and added that a government shutdown will hurt farmers, veterans, and families.
Trump and his running mate JD Vance released a joint statement criticizing the bill, jeopardizing its prospects in the Republican controlled House. Their statement told Republicans to toughen up against Democrats and “call their bluff.” Surprisingly Trump also demanded the bill include a debt ceiling increase, which neither party had been considering in the bill, saying it’s “not great but we’d rather do it on Biden’s watch.”
